Last night, we decided to break in our new waffle maker, purchased in Lima this past weekend. We had been feeling waffle-deprived since moving out of GeGe’s house. We had combined our white flour, banana flour, siete semillas and salvado de trigo, along with baking powder, eggs, sugar, salt and oil, when we realized we forgot vanilla! Oh no! A quick trip across the street to the corner store proved to be our salvation. This fairly large, slightly racist bottle of esencia de vainilla only cost 1.20 soles (a little under 50 cents USD). This seemed really cheap. Isn’t vainilla extract like 10 dollars a bottle in the US?
Also, when/if we complain about having it rough in Peru, remind us that we have a waffle maker. We didn’t even have one of those in the US.
